If you have receding gums, you must know how unattractive and uncomfortable they feel. When your gums recede, it causes your tooth root to show, which is a darker color than your tooth’s enamel. It can also make your straight teeth appear to look crooked. It can also make your teeth feel more sensitive to sweets, heat, and cold.
In the past, dentists needed to give patients a painful and highly invasive procedure to correct receding gums. Today, Dr. Polley offers the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique to treat you in a less invasive way, less discomfort and shorter recovery time. Dr. Polley completed specialized training to offer this amazing treatment to his patients.

Receding Gums Causes and Prevention
Before we explain our revolutionary receding gums treatment in Summerlin, it’s important to understand the cause. Receding gums is typically caused by:
- Gum disease
- Brushing or flossing too hard
- Tobacco use
- Tongue, lip or cheek piercings
- Exposure to stomach acid from vomiting or GERD
Genetics can also play a role. If you already have thin gums, or your mouth tends to foster a certain bacteria or your immune system doesn’t respond well to gum disease, you have an increased risk of developing receding gums.
If you already have receding gums, we will first determine what caused them to recede in the first place. If it was gum disease, we will encourage you to take better care of your oral hygiene. If you are brushing or flossing too hard or over brushing, we will show you how to brush and floss properly.
You can also prevent receding gums by opting not to get a mouth piercing, quit smoking or using tobacco products, wear a nightguard if you have bruxism, or address other health problems that may be the culprit. Dr. Polley will advise the best way to prevent receding gums based on your individual problems.
Benefits of Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique
Don’t worry, you don’t need a gum graft to restore your gums back to their original position. Gum grafts involve cutting tissue from donor sites and then stitching the material over your tooth’s exposed roots. The procedure is painful and the recovery is uncomfortable. With the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, you don’t need a gum graft or stitches involved. Instead of placing the gum tissue over your exposed roots, we simply reposition your current gum tissue to cover your tooth roots.
This approach offers the following benefits:
- Only one small incision the size of a pinhole
- No stitches
- Faster recovery
- Less discomfort
- More attractive results
To complete the procedure, Dr. Polley makes a small incision about the size of a pinhole and uses a special instrument to push the gum tissue down over your tooth root. Since there is only one small incision, there is less discomfort. The incision also doesn’t require stitches and uses collagen “glue” to hold the tissue in place instead. Collagen is the biggest component in gum tissue so the “glue” becomes naturally absorbed. The gums then grow back over the tooth root where Dr. Polley places them.
Since this technique uses real gum tissue near the tooth root instead of gum tissue from another area of the mouth, the results look completely natural in both color and texture.
If you’re looking for an alternative receding gums treatment other than a gum graft, consider the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. Find out if it’s right for you by calling (702) 873-0324 or emailing our dentist in Summerlin to request a consultation.
