With CEREC, we can make dental crowns and other restorations in our office rather than having to send them to a lab for manufacture. Here’s how that benefits you.
One Visit Convenience
With traditional dental crowns, you have to make two visits to the office to get them placed. At your first visit, you will have your tooth prepared. Then the dentist will send materials to the lab where your crown is made. You come back when the crown is ready and get it placed.
With CEREC, we can do this all in one-visit. There’s no need for a second appointment.
With traditional lab-made dental crowns, you have to wear a temporary crown while the permanent crown is being made. Temporary crowns aren’t always very attractive, and they can be uncomfortable. Plus, they don’t always last long enough for your permanent crown to be made.
But with CEREC, you don’t need to wear a temporary: you get your long-term restoration that day.
Digital Scanning Technology
CEREC doesn’t use traditional physical impressions. You don’t have to bite down in a tray of goo and hold still until that goo sets. Instead, we just wave a wand over your teeth and it constructs a 3-D model of your teeth that Dr. Polley can use to design dental crowns. Then the computer carves the crown from a block of advanced ceramic.
More Than Dental Crowns
CEREC is a versatile technology that lets us make many types of dental restorations. Although we usually use it for dental crowns, it can make ceramic fillings, called inlays and onlays, and dental bridges.
Great Color Match
CEREC has dozens of options for material and color, but that’s just a starting place. Dr. Polley can further adjust the color by glazing the crowns in the office. This helps you get a color match that equals or exceeds that of lab-made restorations.
Ceramic Has the Luster of Tooth Enamel
Beyond color, CEREC restorations look natural because they have the same luster as tooth enamel. Luster is the way light reflects off the surface, and the ceramics we use in CEREC restorations match the luster better than other types of materials, like composite.
CEREC restorations match lab-made restorations in every way. They’re just as attractive, and they’re just as durable. One study showed that 97% of CEREC crowns lasted at least 4 years. In a 27-year study, 88% of CEREC inlays and onlays survived. These are restorations with the ability to last for a very long time.
